Personal letters and diaries. Letters concern Thompson's reactions to Southern institutions, morals among Union soldiers, the demoralization of camp life, illnesses among the soldiers, political activities in army circles, conditions in the camps, daily activities, the use of black troops, Thompson's garrison duty in North Carolina, and military activities along the North Carolina coast. The diary, written mainly during the last year of the war, is similar in content to the letters.
